Vainqueur translates as "Victorius One" and this bronze sculpture is that, a real triumph. Eugene Marioton (1854-1933), gained fame and popularity in France by producing the style of the times. This bronze, perhaps accomplished circa 1889, showcases an athlete standing strident, waving a laurel wreath. He holds a bow with a quiver at his feet. This stance was popular during the Age of Industry. Then, as the Symbolist Period began, Marioton used softer, dreamier subject matter.
